8 Demands for a Sustainable Maastricht
We are a diverse group of labour union, NGO and grassroots organizations working together for a fair and social transition to a sustainable society.
Every year is getting warmer, with more risk of drought, storm and flooding. 70% of all wildlife on land and in the sea has died in the past 50 years. Over half of all historical CO2 emissions were emitted in the past 30 years. The richest 1% produces more CO2 emissions than the poorest half of the world population. Resources and money are very unevenly distributed, and are systematically wasted in short-sighted ways. This has to stop.
We cannot solve these problems by looking away, or by hoping that the status quo, which has failed to take sufficient steps for decades, will spontaneously learn from its own mistakes. Too little has been done for too long, which means there is less and less time to solve bigger and bigger problems.
We have a responsibility to the earth and to our children. We feel obliged to make our planet better than we found it, and believe that we can only solve our problems by working together and taking better care of all life on Earth.
This is why we work to urgently solve the local and global problems of our time. We focus primarily on climate change, but place this crisis in a broad context. There is no doubt that biodiversity loss, water scarcity, pollution, inequality, democratic decline, and many other problems are intertwined with our economic, political, scientific, social, cultural and other structures, both local and global.
We do not, however, believe in a single solution for the entire world. The fact that we see the same problems in many places does not mean that everyone has to react in the same way. A forest and a desert are not the same. Every country and culture, and every person, is different. What we need are local solutions to local problems, imbued with collaboration, knowledge and global awareness.
We therefore believe in unity through diversity. The tension between individual and collective interests is, for us, more than a struggle and eternal fact. It is an inexhaustible source of energy, joy, knowledge, wisdom and strength, from which we like to learn, and which we use to promote positive change in our city and elsewhere.
We are proud that our activities can accommodate people with a wide range of skills and interests. This way people can help where they can, and do what they feel comfortable doing. We adopt a human perspective, with sympathy for our own shortcomings and imperfections, as well as those of everyone around us.
We are united by this vision
